What is Clinical Exercise & Pilates?

Clinical Pilates or Clinical Exercise is a form of physical exercise combining traditional rehab exercises with Pilates inspired movements instructed by a Physiotherapist.

Clinical Exercise classes at The Studio are run by qualified Physiotherapists and are focused on the individual, with an emphasis on setting and achieving personal goals. A maximum of 4 participants in each session ensures a supportive atmosphere with personal attention and modifications.

Where do I start?

To provide the most effective program for exercise and rehabilitation clients must book an Initial Consultation  prior to commencing Semi-Private classes.

Following this assessment your Physio will guide you through the best exercise pathway tailored for you. Depending on your history and experience with Pilates equipment it is commonly recommended that you begin with 1-3 Private sessions before joining a class. If you would prefer to continue with Private instruction this is also an option.

What is Clinical Exercise and how does it work?
Clinical Pilates or Clinical Exercise is a form of physical exercise combining traditional rehab exercises with Pilates inspired movements instructed by a Physiotherapist.
Specialised apparatus is utilised allowing specific focus on improving posture, core stability, balance, control, strength, flexibility, and healthy breathing mechanics. Clinical Pilates or Exercise is often used in conjunction with Physiotherapy as a means of treating a variety of injuries. Clinical Exercise classes at The Studio are run by qualified Physiotherapists and are focused on the individual, with an emphasis on setting and achieving personal goals. A maximum of 4 participants in each session ensures a supportive atmosphere with personal attention and modifications.

Exercises can be modified to accommodate injuries through the use of equipment such as the reformer, cadillac, wunda chair, ladder barrel and spine corrector. These apparatuses allow for personalised exercises adapted to all levels of experience and ability. Pre/post-natal women are welcome to attend any Studio Clinical Classes.

How to get started?
To provide the most effective program for exercise and rehabilitation clients must book an Initial Consultation  prior to commencing Semi-Private classes. This consultation is used to take an injury history, perform
a physical assessment identifying any areas of weakness or movement faults that should be addressed.

An external real-time ultrasound assessment of the pelvic floor and deep abdominal muscles may be
performed. This assessment provides direct visual feedback, ensuring you have a thorough understanding of the function of the core and how it activates so you can get the most out of your sessions.

Following this assessment your Physio will guide you as to the best exercise pathway for you. Depending on your history and experience with Pilates equipment it is commonly recommended that you begin with 1-3 Private sessions before joining a class. If you would prefer to continue with Private instruction this is also an option.

Physiotherapists at The Studio work as a cohesive team so if based on availability and your convenience you end up seeing multiple Studio staff, please feel assured your case notes will be carefully handed over allowing a smooth transition between practitioners and an uninterrupted path to physical success.

Physiotherapists will provide feedback throughout your program and most likely recommend ta follow up appointment to assess your progress and reassess your goals. This can be arranged by booking a follow up Physiotherapy appointment.

FAQ's

People often associate Pilates with ‘core strength’ but what does this really mean?
The core, or powerhouse, is made up of the deep abdominal muscles, the pelvic girdle (including the pelvic floor and gluteals) and back extensor muscles. Pilates strengthens these muscles, developing a balanced and stable musculoskeletal system.
Along with physical benefits, Pilates works wonders for stress relief and mental balance. An effective session involves concentration, breathing and a strong mind body connection; a mindful diversion from the buzz of everyday life.
Whether you are recovering from a knee replacement, returning to exercise postnatally or looking for something to complement and enhance your running program, Pilates is the answer to all!

Why do I need an initial consultation?
An initial consult allows your instructor to take a thorough medical and injury history in order to formulate the best Pilates plan for you.  This 1:1 time is incredibly valuable with the use of real-time Ultrasound to ensure you have a thorough understanding in regards to core activation (and importantly relaxation). Your initial consult will set you up for an effective small group practice.

I am pregnant can I do Clinical Pilates?
Absolutely!  Through the use of a wide variety of apparatus Pilates exercises can be modified to allow safe exercise throughout your entire pregnancy. Classes are run by skilled physiotherapists who will guide you throughout your pregnancy journey ensuring you are able to continue to enjoy the benefits of exercise. We do not wrap our Preggies in cotton wool so expect to feel challenged and empowered throughout your pregnancy.

I want to do reformer Pilates, do you offer it?
In many ways yes! Clinical Pilates makes use of the reformer, but we also make use of other fantastic Pilates apparatus, eg the cadillac, wunda chair, ladder barrel and spine corrector and traditional mat rehab and Pilates exercises. We also offer specific Reformer Classes under Group Exercise. These classes are appropriate for those looking for a higher intensity workout and are a progression from Clinical Classes.

I recently had a baby and want to do Barre and Reformer classes, can I go right ahead?

Prior to returning to general fitness classes such as Barre or Reformer Pilates we strongly recommend booking a Women’s Health or Clinical Initial Assessment. Your body has been through significant change (a lot which isn’t visible) and what might have been appropriate for you prenatally may well have changed. This assessment will provide you with the understanding of what exercises are safe for you and a realistic time frame for your return to Pre-Pregnancy/baby activities.

What do I need to bring?
We provide all equipment you will require, if you would like to bring a small towel you are welcome.

It is a requirement that socks are worn during classes for both hygiene and safety purposes. Grip socks are available for purchase at The Studio.
